Debate: Museums are bad at telling us why art matters

…. to skip the long role call skip to 2:30…

written by Becka Viau

I challenge you to consider this debate and then mix it up with your thoughts about a Prince Edward Island Provincial Museum. I am not suggesting another animatronic display of the father’s of Confederation … but how significant is the closing of  Founder’s Hall? What will become of that space? Is a true museum the answer?

Produced by William Beckett for Arts on PEI

The fifth Arts on PEI mini-doc! See how Charlottetown film critic, Dave Stewart, uses the comic strip format to create his unique movie reviews. We’ll watch from start to finish as he draws his latest “And Yet I Blame Hollywood” strip for the February 2012 issue of PEI’s monthly arts and entertainment newspaper, “The Buzz.”

Arts on PEI is a continuing series of mini-documentaries, highlighting the diversity of Prince Edward Island’s arts scene. We’ll be sharing the stories of artists, writers, musicians, photographers and others, all of whom contribute to the wealth of talent available in this little province.

The King and I: Hockey Bar … at the Confed Gallery!

leave a comment »

A contemporary art experience where two of Canada’s favorite pastimes meet: beer and hockey.

The King and I: Hockey Bar is where familiar elements of daily culture (beer and hockey) collide with current art practices. Inspired by sports bars and basement rumpus rooms, this installation emulates the atmosphere of a public house.

The King (Eleanor King) and I (Stefan Hancherow) are the curators, the artists, and the bartenders in this experience. It’s one installation, but it’s made up of works by Canadian contemporary artists (with the exception of Andy Warhol), memorabilia borrowed from local hockey enthusiasts and archives, and the trappings of a functioning bar. Most importantly, it’s made up of those who populate the gallery when we are open for business, though the “business” is not for profit. The King and I’s primary mandate is to foster the discussion which happens when people come together and exist in common.

Join the gallery crew for Happy Hour at the Hockey Bar on February 8, 10 and 11 from 5-7 p.m.
